Solidarity in action against right-wing extremism: activist and philanthropic innovations from Croatia

SOLIDARNA Foundation, SOLIDAR and the European Civic Forum are cordially inviting you to the round table discussion

Solidarity in action against right-wing extremism: activist and philanthropic innovations from Croatia

Brussels, Rue de Pascale 4, February 16, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m.

The debate will provide unique insiders insight from Croatia  into the current political and social context and  innovative activist and philanthropic practices of citizens' resistance to hostile attacks on human rights that have arisen in Croatia over the past year from the rights-winged political sphere and civil society groups, marked by concerning indicators of democratic regression, i.e. shrinking civil space, attacks on media freedoms and independent culture, proliferation of hate speech and discrimination of national and sexual minorities and stalled education reform.  Even though the government changed in September 2016, these negative political and social trends persist and demand concerted civil society efforts to protect  democratic standards that Croatia committed to at the time of Croatias accession to the EU.

The key note speakers are Marina krabalo, director of SOLIDARNA Foundation, senior advisor at GONG and EESC member,  Vilim Matula, renowned Croatia actor and activist,  Sandra Benčić, human rights expert from the Centre for Peace Studies and member of SOLIDARNA Foundation Board and Conny Reuter, Secretary General of SOLIDAR, European civil society network for social justice.

This will be an opportunity to learn first-hand about  SOLIDARNA Foundation for human rights and solidarity, the very first private foundation set up by the Croatian human rights community, the transnational artists' initiative Kulturnjaci2016, humanitarian-advocacy coalition Refugees Welcome, grassroots association Are You Syrious?, trade-union-civil alliance for education reform Croatia Can Do Better and SOLIDARNA Foundation for human rights and solidarity set up by human rights community.  In the discussion, the focus will be on creative approaches to resource mobilization, advocacy and citizens' engagement that can foster autonomy, resilience and sustainability of human rights activism across Europe, in light of ever more oppressive political agendas, too rigid funding regimes and systematic degradation of independent, investigative journalism.

In hope that the debate and lessons learned from Croatia will be inspiring for our transnational networking and cooperation, we are looking forward to your attendance!FB event:  https://www.facebook.com/events/654386804730223/

Upon the event, we are cordially inviting you to the LAVA CAFÉ  for SOLIDARNA Get together from 8 p.m. onwards , Arteveldestraat (close to De Brouckère) to meet in a more informal setting and enjoy activist and philanthropic flavours of Croatia, with Vilim Matula, Croatian artist, who will warm us up!
